Thanks to Eddie Geoghegan for providing this crest from his excellent page on heraldry. |
The crest above is that of the Ashe clan. The Ashe family motto roughly translates as "Not for us but for everyone".
These pages are intended to provide information on the origins of the Dingle branch of the Ashe clan in Ireland. The name Ashe has Norman origins from the name d'Esse. The earliest Ashes have been traced back to 14th century and were originally based in Meath and Kildare. In 1641 Thomas, Henry and Walter Ashe of Naas, Co. Kildare were outlawed for treason by the King's Bench. It is thought that these men moved to Kerry and started the Dingle Ashes. |

These pages concentrate on the descendants of James Ashe who was born in about 1770 and came to Kinard in about 1790. He married Mary Griffin, the daughter of the landowner of most of the Kinard and Tober lands. There is much more to follow... A study of the telephone directory reveals the current distribution of Ashes (with phones!) around Ireland. View a skeleton family tree going back 5 generations to James Ashe and Mary Griffin. |
